| FAQ 6. What is a "Surigical Procedure" ? A surgical procedure is performed, in this office, by a well know medical doctor and Obstetrics/Gynecologist (specialty in women’s health care). It does not require any cutting or general anesthesia. There are three ways that this procedure may be performed in this office, depending on the amount of tissue, or how far along the pregnancy may be. A. If pregnancy is less than 7 weeks from the cycle (first day of the last period), or 5 weeks from conception, according to the calculations of the ultrasound from this office; a surgical hand-held procedure may be performed. The cervix (opening to the uterus at the end of the vagina) is stretched open, not cut, by manual dilator rods. 3-5 of them. An instrument that looks like a large syringe with a straw shaped piece, not a needle, is inserted through the cervix and by vacuum aspiration, the contents is emptied from the uterus. This type of evacuation has less pressure and therefor has less cramping. The whole surgical process takes approximately 5 minutes. Further explanation and details will be discussed privately. B. If pregnancy is over 7 weeks, and up to 12 weeks from the cycle (first day of the last period) according to the calculations of the ultrasound in this office, the surgical procedure is more efficiently and safely accomplished by machine evacuation. Cervical dilation is performed as described above and again; this process takes approximately 5 minutes. Further explanation and details will be discussed privately. C. If pregnancy is over 12 weeks, and up to 14 weeks from the cycle (first day of the last period) according to the calculations of the ultrasound in this office, the surgical procedure is more efficiently and safely accomplished by a two-day process. A laminaria, which looks like a wide tooth-pick, acts like a sponge, and is inserted in the cervix. With the natural moistures and an antiseptically moisturized small sponge in the vagina, the laminaria slowly expands the cervix open over night. This may not be felt at all, or some cramping may be alleviated by over-the-counter Ibuprofen or other non-Aspirin light pain reliever. The following day, or a minimal 6 hours later, the surgical machine evacuation as described above is safely and easily performed in approximately 5 minutes.Further explanation and details will be discussed privately. |
